Standing Exhibits

Chicon 7 has set aside 30,000 square feet of the Riverside Center Exhibit Hall, conveniently located right next to the Dealers Room, for Standing Exhibits. Among the plans for this space are such traditional things as the Fan Lounge and the Hugo Gallery, plus we will be featuring a History of Fandom in Chicago exhibit. We're also working on a few more exhibits, and we are open to any and all suggestions for ways to fill this space. If you have an idea or, better yet, have something you think we'd be interested in using, let us know. We're also looking for volunteers to help organize the various exhibits, assist in setting them up, or generally keep things running smoothly. Fan Lounge

If you enjoy stimulating conversation while surrounded by decades of fannish publications, you'll want to join us in the Fan Lounge, conveniently located on the Concourse near the Exhibits.

Come and thrill to the exciting adventures of fanzine editors, writers, and artists, or just come to plop down and get into the deep thoughts of some of fandoms most colorful characters! Or even just stop by, pick up a zine, and have a gander! Maybe you'll wanna come along to enjoy some of the spontaneous activities that always seem to germinate in the Lounge.

We'll also be hosting kaffeeklatsches and various programming items all out of the Fan Lounge!

The WSFS Banner

The WSFS Banner has been traditionally hung at Worldcon for many years. It was conceived and designed by David A. Kyle ("the fan in the red jacket") and made by fan Jean Carroll.

The banner was made for the 14th Worldcon held in New York in 1956, of which David Kyle was chairman. As David says, " I was inspired because the Biltmore Hotel had flagstaffs that jutted out over the front of the hotel over their marquee flying various appropriate flags (usually the American Flag). I decided we should have a WSFS convention banner of the appropriate dimensions hanging there also, and so it flew there during the convention weekend."

The banner vanished from sight for a number of years - we now know it was held by Howard DeVore for at least a decade - before reappearing.

The banner has been through a museum quality conservation process for Chicon 7, giving us all the chance to continue appreciating this important piece of Worldcon history. Our thanks go to Jill Eastlake for arranging the conservation work, and to Jill and to Renovation, the 2011 Worldcon, for contributing to the cost.
