Noreascon Four, the 62nd World Science Fiction Convention, has solicited
proposals for Hugo Award and Retrospective Hugo Award Base designs. Our
press release
regarding these designs provides the basic information.
In addition to that press release, this page provides both general
and more technical information about the specifications needed for Hugo Base
Designs proposals.
- Bases may be made of wood, metal, lucite, or any other material
which has a fixed form. Materials which will change form when aged,
heated, etc. should not be used.
- Bases must be designed in such a way that the silver Hugo rocket
is an integral part of the design. We will supply rockets for the
bases.
- Rockets are bolted to the bases from below the tailfins.
- Rocket specs:
- 13" tall
- 2" across from fin-tip to fin-tip
- weight 3 lb. 2 oz.
- bolt 1/4" machine screw thread
- View some past Hugo Award Base designs.
- The design must stand on a flat surface in some way. Do
not craft a hanging design or one only appropriate for zero-G.
- Space must be left for a plaque or plaques indicating convention,
winner, category of award won.
- We're wicked allergic to designs which disintegrate in people's
luggage, cannot be easily shipped, or which have little bits (or big bits,
for that matter) that may fall off of them and need re-attaching.
Designs may be submitted for the 2004 Hugo Awards, for the Retrospective
Hugo Awards for 1953, or for both awards.
Design proposals must be submitted by 1 October 2003, and they should
include:
- Drawings, sketches, and/or a fabricated sample of the proposed
base unit.
- Cost estimate per base, and estimated total cost for the fabrication
and shipping of 20 base units.
- Lead time needed for fabrication.
- Your ability to either craft the bases or arrange for the work
to be done.
As a guideline, bases should cost $100 each or less to fabricate, and
the finished bases should be shipped to Noreascon Four in Boston not later
than 15 July 2004.
Proposals should be submitted either electronically or via postal mail.
Electronic submission. Please email
proposals to
hugodesign@noreascon.org.
Include the information above and a JPG, TIFF or GIF image of
your design. If you are using a program which does not automatically
add extensions to file names, please tell us, in your narrative, what file
format to expect.
Postal mail submission. Please send,
via U.S. postal mail (or international postal mail) the information above
and your sketch/drawing/sample base (or a disk or CD containing your sketch/drawing).
