Getting to Loncon 3
This page sets out some initial information about travel to ExCeL in London. More information, covering many modes of international travel to the UK as well as the journey to ExCeL, will be provided here later. Further detail will continue to be provided as we get closer to Loncon 3.
Air
ExCeL is between 75 and 90 minutes from Heathrow and Gatwick airports by public transport (with changes), but it's less than a mile from the short-haul London City Airport.
London City is a short-haul airport offering flights to many European destinations. For inter-continental destinations, you can connect through the European hubs at Amsterdam Schiphol, Frankfurt, Zurich or Madrid – or wherever national carriers are based.
We plan to investigate the feasibility of running shuttle buses between ExCeL and Heathrow on the peak arrival and departure days.
Train
Travelling from London’s mainline train stations to ExCeL takes between 35 and 40 minutes, including St Pancras International which has international train services (Eurostar) to Paris and Brussels.
The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) offers a direct service to Stratford International station, which we hope will offer services to European cities through the Channel Tunnel by 2014, but is currently used only for high-speed domestic services to Kent (which provides another connection to Eurostar services).
London Transport
ExCeL is served by two stations on the DLR system, an above-ground light rail system which is fully integrated into London’s transport network, with many connections to the London Underground and other rail services. It is also fully wheelchair accessible.
The DLR stations at ExCeL have direct services to Stratford International in east London, and Tower Gateway at the Tower of London, with trains running until nearly 1 am (although earlier on Sunday night).
From ExCeL to the City of London (Bank or Tower Gateway stations) is around a 20 minute journey on the DLR. To the West End (Westminster or Green Park stations) is around 35 minutes, including one change to the Underground.
Car
ExCeL and the onsite hotels have plenty of paid car parking spaces; we will advise on prices closer to the convention. ExCeL is close to the A13, one of the main roads through East London.
Further information about travel to and from ExCeL can also be found in ExCeL’s own Travel Guide.
