Convention Highlights
Loncon 3 is planning many celebrations and commemorations of science fiction and fantasy appropriate to the seventy-fifth anniversary Worldcon. Right now, we're only going to whet your appetite about these events; there will be much more information in months to come. Some of these events are so spectacular, they will end up having their own pages on this site, so do continue to check back with us!
We also welcome input from our members, so if you have an idea for an event or programme item at Loncon 3, please let us know.
Opening Ceremony and Closing Ceremony
These will be the bookends for the convention. We are looking forward to producing an exciting Opening Ceremony with which to welcome you, including meeting our Guests of Honour, and a Closing Ceremony showcasing the most memorable moments from the convention, farewells from our Guests, and an introduction to the 2015 Worldcon.
Thursday - The Retro-Hugo Awards Ceremony
We invite you to join us on Thursday evening at Loncon 3 as we present the 1939 Retro-Hugo Awards.
Our imagining of what the 1939 Hugo Awards would have been like – complete with retro-futuristic clothing, swing music, and 1939 formal wear – will be a gala night to remember.
We also encourage you to participate personally by wearing your own retro-futuristic costumes (what might you have predicted the future would be wearing if you had been at Nycon I?) or true retro 1939 formal wear – and then join us after the ceremony for the first dance of Loncon 3, celebrating the music of 1939 and swing dancing!
Saturday - The Masquerade
The Masquerade is the highlight of Worldcon's cosplay activities - a competitive catwalk show showcasing costumes from novice level to the the highest levels of workmanship and presentation. There's also a special division for children.
The Loncon 3 Masquerade is being run by Giulia De Cesare, assisted by Kathy Westhead and Clare Goodall. The Masquerade will take place on Saturday night (16 August 2014) in the ICC Auditorium.
We will provide more information as it becomes available, including how to register to be a participant.
Sunday - The Hugo Awards Ceremony
The Hugo Awards are the premier award in the science fiction genre, honouring science fiction and fantasy literature and media as well as the genre's fans. You and the other members of the convention can nominate and then vote on the winners of the awards for the year; details on the process can be found here.
The awards are presented at a formal ceremony, which is always considered to be one of the highlights of the Worldcon. The ceremony at Loncon 3 will take place on the evening of Sunday 17 August 2014 and is being directed by John Brown. We hope to continue the recent tradition of streaming the ceremony live via the internet, enabling fans around the world to take part in this celebration of the best of the year's science fiction.
Concerts and Dances
In the tradition of many Worldcons, we plan to offer many opportunities for our attendees to get their groove on during the convention. We expect to have several dances of various styles, as well as many live musical performances.
Theatre
We are excited to be finalising a number of live dramatic performances, large and small, for the enjoyment of our attendees throughout the weekend. Please continue to check back with us as we put the finishing touches on our version of a West End season.
