About Worldcon

The World Science Fiction Convention (“Worldcon”) is an international gathering of the science fiction and fantasy community. The first Worldcon was held in 1939, and the event has been annual since 1946, with the location changing each year. Attendees come from all over the world, and in the last decade the convention has been held on four different continents. The UK has hosted the Worldcon six times before (in London, Brighton and Glasgow), most recently in 2005.

Modern Worldcons are held over five days and are attended by thousands of members. Attendees include writers, artists, fans, editors, publishers, academics and dealers – with many individuals counting themselves in more than one such category – but all with an interest in science fiction.

Worldcons are organised and run by volunteers. Many members volunteer in some capacity each year, although most of the overseeing committee for each year’s convention will be different people to the year before. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to get involved (both before and during the convention) if you want to.

Worldcons are not just about the written word, although written science fiction is an interest most attendees have in common. Over the decades Worldcons have grown to embrace science fiction in all the forms in which it appears, including film, TV, art, comics, anime and manga, and gaming. Loncon 3 intends to explore science fiction in all these forms and extend these explorations into the worlds of fantasy, horror, slipstream and alternate history, as well as exploring the science in science fiction, the spectacle it has inspired from artists and costumers, and the creativity and enjoyment science fiction has generated amongst its fans.

At the convention itself, there will be hundreds of programme items which all members can attend, as well as major events such as the Hugo Awards ceremony and Masquerade. Each Worldcon invites a small number of guests of honour, recognising their contribution to the field and the community of science fiction. The guests’ work and interests usually inspire significant elements within the programme.

There will also be exhibits, an extensive dealers’ area, an art show and auction, and many fun and social aspects to the Worldcon during the day and evening.

A complete programme will be posted on the website shortly before the convention so you can start planning each day (information about particular highlights of each day will be publicised further in advance, not least to inform people who plan to attend for only part of the Worldcon). Programme apps are now increasingly available at the event itself, but in any case attending members will receive a printed pocket programme, along with a bound souvenir book.
