Volunteer to help
All Worldcons rely on volunteers to run them; there are no paid staff: The Worldcon is probably the world's largest all-volunteer event. From the bid stage through to the convention itself, Loncon 3 will eventually need around 600 volunteers covering all aspects of the convention from people who join up for the planning stages, to many who will volunteer to help at the event itself.
You’ll find many of those who’ve already volunteered on our staff list. We’re all doing this in our spare time and, like any hobby, at our own cost. We’re working on Loncon 3 for the sheer fun of contributing to a celebration of science fiction that we believe so many more people will enjoy in August 2014. Volunteering can also be a great way to meet people, and if it’s your first time at a Worldcon, it’s also one way to help put everything in context! Whether you are a seasoned volunteer or a first-timer, your contribution will be highly valued.
We still need people to do all types of tasks – some for most of the time between now and the convention; some as a discrete and quite short-term project; some helping with really practical things at the con itself. Some things can be done by individuals, many will be as part of a team – who might very well not all be in the same place or time zone!
So if you’re willing to help out, please fill in our volunteer form and let us know what you’re interested in and what you can do. Don’t assume that because your expertise isn’t related to SF cons that it won’t be relevant! Any experience you’ve got from running other conventions or events could well be useful; so could skills and experience at work, from your studies or with other leisure activities.
We need people to be creative and people to be organised in planning the con (sometimes both at once). We need people to help us move into the ExCeL, including to build things – and to help us move out again. We need people who are willing to give tours of the Art Show and exhibits, and people to take their turn at providing useful information (about the convention, London, and the UK). We need all sorts of people with communications skills, data management expertise, retail experience, a flair for problem-solving, energy, patience, great ideas and the ability to make them happen.
At the heart of it, though, we need people who love science fiction and want to contribute to making Loncon 3 an enjoyable and inspiring experience for everyone involved. The only essential skill is to be willing to help. And so what we really need is you – if you want to be part of it.
Submitting the form will not commit you to anything at this stage, and you can choose the amount of time you are willing to give and when you are available – including at the convention. This means that you won’t have to miss out on any programme items you really want to see.
If you have ideas about the programme or want to volunteer to participate in that, you can find out here some more about what our Programme team are asking from volunteers and how to contact them.
Thanks in advance for your help.
